Install iPhone apps on your iPod touch

This article is an answer to the iPod upgrade that is currently costing many people 20$. I don't think it is fair to do so, since the people that buy the iPod now actually get these free. As far as I know I paid the same price for a lesser iPod, I should get the applications for free.

1- Download the files at one of these locations:
http://www.sharebig.com/share.php?id=s4bcbekqmkJEHKPB
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GN9CKYJX

2-You are then going to unzip these files, and you will end up with 8 file/folders.

3-Place Weather.app, MobileMail.app, Stock.app, Maps.app, MobileNotes.app in /Applications/ on your iPod.

4-Put GMM.framework in /System/Library/Frameworks/ on your iPod.

5-Put N45AP.plist in /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/ on your iPod.

6-Put MobileMailSettings.bundle in /System/Library/PreferenceBundles/ on your iPod.

7-You are going to have to set the file permissions to these apps, so everything you just put on your iPod touch must have the following permission : 755, or the applications will not work properly.

8-Reboot.

You are know on your way to appreciate your new iPod touch applications.

You might be wondering how to put these files on the iPod touch. Well first of all, you have to jailbreak your iPod, click here for more information. Also, you are going to need your iPod's WiFi IP address, if you don't have WiFi, this will not work.
To find your iPod Touch Wifi Ip Address go into Settings>wifi>blue arrow on the wifi network you are using and it will be there.

Once that is done, you are going to need to use an FTP client that supports SFTP (Secure FTP). I recommend CyberDuck for Mac OSX it is free and is real easy to use. For Windows, I suggest WS_FTP for the same reasons. Also these two FTP clients will permit you to change the files permissions easily.

There is a possibility of your apps crashing, the solution to the bug is to:
Open Putty on your windows based system. On OS X, you can use Terminal and write:

ssh root@insertIPodTouchesIpAdresseHere.

Login to your iPod touch
username:root
password: alpine.

Once logged in run the following commands, by typing and pressing enter:
/bin/csh

/bin/chmod -Rf a+x /Applications/*

Free iPod touch upgrade

So I was surprised to find out, the iPod touch upgrade is 20$. I mean, isn't that the worse idea ever? I paid for my iPod touch, just like anyone else, why should I have to pay for it to be up to date.

The worse part of it, is that anybody buying a new iPod touch as of now, will get the new applications for free, which are basically what the upgrade is for. These new applications are : Maps, Mail, Stocks, Notes and Weather.

The good news, is that if you have what they call a jailbroken iPod, you will be able to get these applications for free! Yay!

So how are you going to do this? First, you have to put your firmware in 1.1.1. If you are in 1.2.1, you are going to have to downgrade. To find out if you have the right firmware go into "settings" and click on "about" then you’ll see wat firmware you have. Here are the simple steps to do so:

1. Download the 1.1.1 firmware

2. Once downloaded set your itouch into recovery mode (see below)

3. Hold shift and click restore(go into itunes)

4. Double click the 1.1.1 file you downloaded

5. Wait, once it's done working, you should have the right firware.

7. Now you can jailbreak and install iphone apps (just use my instructions)

For recovery Mode

1. Have your itouch on and connected into your computer

2. hold both the sleep home button

3. When you see the apple let go of the sleep button

4. Then you’ll see your iPod touch will ask you to hook it up to your computer.

Once you are in the right firmware and have validated it. You are going to go on jailbreakme.com, download and install appsnap. Let appsnap work and then go into install and install the following apps : openssh, bsd system, launcher.

You will then be able to install the applications you want on your jailbroken iPod.

I am not responsible for software failure or other mishaps, this article is plainly used for information. I will follow up with an article on how to install the iPhone apps on the iPod touch.
